Long Range Planning

The mission of the Long Range Planning and Systems Program is to develop plans, guidance, and information and encourage public involvement to achieve healthy community development over the long-term.

"Long Range Planning and Systems” Program is a division of the Community Development Department that:
  • Provides support to the Planning Commission and the City Council for decisions or recommendations on various plans, policies, and development regulations;
  • Develops and maintains the Comprehensive Plan, along with various plans and standards for community development, preservation, and disaster recovery;
  • Facilitates the City's participation in the countywide Commute Trip Reduction Program;
  • Encourages economic development, environmental protection, affordable housing for all income levels, and efficient transportation, in coordination with other local governments; and
  • Manages maps and underlying data through a geographic information system (GIS).

    Mountlake Terrace participates with the Washington State Department of Transportation, Snohomish County, transit agencies, and other cities to promote transportation efficiency, walkability, and commute trip reduction.

    Mountlake Terrace is proud of its environmental features, such as Lake Ballinger, Hall Creek, McAleer Creek, and various wetlands, ravines, and terraces.

  4. Housing

    Mountlake Terrace is home to nearly 21,000 people and about 7,000 jobs. It is a great place to live – located between Seattle and Everett on I-5 and offering ample parks and recreation, a strong school system, walkability, and a growing Town Center.

    The last round of information requested by the state Department of Ecology for the update of Mountlake Terrace’s Shoreline Master Program (SMP) has been submitted by the City’s Community and Economic Development Department.

    Traffic congestion is getting worse and will continue to degrade if we do not change how we commute. People now realize that building more lanes is not solving our congestion problems. A more balanced solution is critical to reducing congestion, and can also improve quality of life, health, the environment, the economy, and protect neighborhoods.
