The City of Mountlake Terrace has been a regional proponent for affordable housing and was instrumental in the formation of the Alliance for Housing Affordability (AHA). The AHA is a consortium of 13 jurisdictions in Snohomish County that seek to identify the issues, impediments and successful approaches to addressing the current and future needs for affordable housing at all income levels.
- Housing Authority of Snohomish County (HASCO) - A local governmental agency whose mission is "To provide housing opportunities that are as affordable as possible, that enhance the quality of life for individuals and families of limited financial resources, and that contribute to a safer and stronger community." - Homage Senior Services - The Fair Housing Act requires that a property owner must "permit, at the expenses of the special needs person, reasonable modification of existing premises occupied or to the occupied by such person is such modifications may be necessary to afford such person full enjoyment of the premises." - Housing Consortium of Everett and Snohomish County - This site represents a consortium of housing advocates in Snohomish County known as "The Snohomish County Office of Housing Homelessness and Community Development (
OHHCD)." The OHHCDconsortium members administer federal, state and local funds dedicated to ending homelessness and developing and maintaining affordable housing. OHHCDalso oversees the implementation of Snohomish County 10 Year Plan to End Homelessness and manages the annual Point in Time Count of homeless people. SnohomishHousing Resources website
- Housing Profile for Mountlake Terrace - The profile is a statistical look at the cost of housing in the City and household income. In this profile, "cost burden" is used as a benchmark to evaluate housing affordability. A household is considered "household cost burdened" when that household spends more than 30 percent of their income on housing. Households with lower incomes will likely have to sacrifice spending on other essentials like food or medical care to afford the median cost of owning or renting a place to live. There is no one solution or a simple solution to assure sufficient affordable housing for all income groups. However, it is important to the City to be actively engaged in finding opportunities and potential solutions to improve the situation. The City has already taken important steps to diversify housing options - and thereby affordability. Some examples are to allow and encourage accessory dwelling units, creating smaller lot sizes in some areas of the City, increasing density close to the Town Center and the Mountlake Transit Station, offering financial incentives such as property tax abatement, reducing the amount of parking required and investing in sidewalks to improve access within the community.
