PLANNING HISTORY

In May 2008 the City of Mountlake Terrace hired the firm of Moore Iacofano Goltsman, Inc. (MIG) to develop our Arts and Cultural Plan. The plan was completed and adopted by City Council on October 5, 2009.

Arts and Cultural Planning Kick off
Aaron Abrahms facilitated the Arts and Cultural Plan Kick off on November 28,2008. The Arts Commission members, Council Liaison Mayor Pro Tem Laura Sonmore and City Staff attended.

Focus Group Provide Insights in City’s Arts and Cultural Plan
Following the Arts and Cultural Plan initial kickoff meeting held on October 28, a number of focus group meetings were heldin December. Focus group meetings were a key component of the overall planning process and provided opportunities to receive input and ideas from various individuals, groups and organizations regarding the delivery of potential arts programs/projects within the City. The focus groups identified included representatives from the business community, including Premera Blue Cross, neighboring cities, Edmonds School District, Edmonds Community College, non-profit art organizations and local artists. The first focus group meeting was held on December 3 at the Recreation Pavilion and included local artists. Five artists representing various disciplines responded to a series of questions and provided insights into the value of community art and described how art can enhance the local economy, education and community pride. Additional focus group meetings were held for neighboring cities & other agencies and local businesses.

Arts and Cultural Plan Workshop
The Arts Advisory Commission participated in an arts and cultural planning workshop on Saturday, January 10, 2009 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Recreation Pavilion. The workshop included a review of the focus group meetings that were previously conducted in December along with identifying key planning strategies to be included in an Arts and Cultural Plan for the City. The agenda topics for the January 10 workshop included the following topics: assets, issues and opportunities preliminary findings; mission, core values, and goals review; strategy retreat toolkit review; desired objectives discussion; strategy development sessions; action plan development session; and summary/next steps.
