The City of Mountlake Terrace is developing a comprehensive and visionary Recreation, Parks & Open Space Master Plan to guide the construction of new recreation facilities, parks, and open spaces, as well as the renovation of existing facilities over the next twenty years.
WHAT IT IS
This plan will reflect our city’s vision of a vibrant community that responds to the needs and desires of our residents, friends, and visitors for fun, healthy, exciting, and diverse activities in our award-winning Recreation and Parks system. The drive behind producing a Master Plan is to make our system even better than it is now. This plan is visionary because it looks at where we are now, what the anticipated needs are for the future, and how we can improve and upgrade our existing facilities.
WHY WE’RE DOING THIS—PURPOSE
The City of Mountlake Terrace is looking at the current strengths, challenges, needs, and priorities of our community, as well as possible opportunities for growth in the future.
The purpose of the Recreation, Parks and Open Space Master Plan is to create a clear and concise set of goals, policies, and objectives that will provide direction for our City’s future growth. It is a comprehensive, long-range plan that will provide a foundation for strategic actions that will shape Mountlake Terrace’s future parks system, open space, trails, recreation facilities, recreation programs and services over the next twenty years.
KEY COMPONENTS OF THE PLAN
- Identifying appropriate parks, open space and trails development standards; identify opportunities and deficiencies in the park system and open space; and create a parks system, trails and open space renovation program.
Recreation Facilities
- Identify appropriate recreation standards and services; and identify opportunities for future recreation programs and services.
Recreation Program, Services, and Facilities
- Examine and evaluate the current recreation programs, services, and facilities; identify appropriate standards and services; and identify deficiencies and opportunities for future recreation programs and services.
SOME OF OUR VISIONS FOR THE FUTURE
Address aging infrastructure issues by taking action steps to upgrade facilities and amenities. It is now time to reinvest so we can strategically plan ahead to prevent future problems.
- Add more connecting pathways and trails in our parks
- Offer additional amenities to attract and retain residents and visiting tourists
- Provide increased recreation opportunities for local residents
- Support downtown redevelopment efforts through connectivity and beautification of the community

- Preserve and care for natural open spaces in the urban setting
- Add new recreation facilities to accommodate the changing needs of our population, such as our many young families, as well as those moving toward retirement
