As a community, Mountlake Terrace’s economic health and commercial vibrancy have greatly improved in recent years, according to a public survey. Continued downtown development and Phase II of the Main Street project were described as top priorities for economic sustainability.
The survey results also show areas for improvement, including incentives for businesses to locate here, and the city could do more to foster opportunities for events, especially in arts and culture. Residents said they would like to see new employers, better access to affordable health care and childcare, and expanded shopping options.
Since 2007, the City of Mountlake Terrace has conducted a community satisfaction survey approximately every two years. This occurs through a third-party vendor and provides helpful insights to set benchmarks, watch for trends, and see how the city’s efforts are received in the community.
Last November, the paper survey was mailed to 2,700 households to create a statistically valid sample. A second version, available to everyone, later was posted online. Hundreds of people responded.
The tabulated results of the paper survey were presented to the City Council at the Feb. 17 work/study session. The presentation materials can be found at https://bit.ly/3pcvTaZ, along with the full, 98-page report from the vendor. The meeting video also is posted at www.cityofmlt.com/129.
Overall, the majority of respondents rated Mountlake Terrace as a positive place to make a home, and they said it offers a good quality of life.
Other categories in the survey included public safety, recreation and parks, inclusiveness, environment, utilities, and health and wellness. Some of these data sets were affected by the realities of the pandemic, and they can fluctuate with other external factors.
The percentages also are compared to a national average from some 600 communities, according to the vendor. All of the data can be found online here or through the links above.
